Sometimes the work we do to pay the bills doesn't always bring us complete joy. Does this mean you need to begin looking for a new job? Or maybe just hunker down and press on? It’s questions like this that may have you stop and ask yourself: “What am I passionate about?” “What will bring me joy?” This may be the perfect opportunity to lean into a passion project outside of work that can be a fulfilling way to reignite your spark and increase the joy in your life.

Let’s first look at what a passion project is - or can be. This will undoubtedly look different from one person to the next. For some, a passion project may simply be a hobby that you decide to give a little more attention to. Instead of practicing piano or bringing out your knitting on a semi-regular basis, maybe you begin scheduling time to prioritize and hone your craft. 

For others, a passion project may have the potential to become a business. Do you enjoy making handcrafted jewelry? Do you possess marketing skills, knowledge and experience? If so, is there potential that these “hobbies” can evolve into something you get paid to execute? Whatever comes to mind for you as a potential hobby or business, make sure you bring it back to the key question: “Does this bring joy and fulfillment?” It’s often easy for people to see dollar signs and think, “Well, I’m pretty good at XYZ, I guess I could try making some money that way.” Just because you have a certain skill, doesn’t mean that skill always brings you joy. Don’t forget this key point.

Time constraints, energy levels and the mental and emotional strain of juggling multiple commitments can all take a toll. However, there are ways to navigate this balancing act. Consider time-blocking techniques, delegating tasks, or saying “No” to unnecessary commitments. Additionally, finding a supportive partner who understands and encourages your pursuits can make a significant difference - and help you keep your eye on the prize.

By setting clear goals, creating a structured schedule and prioritizing tasks, you can optimize your time and allocate it effectively to both areas. Laying the Foundation. Before diving into the entrepreneurial journey, it's crucial to establish a solid foundation for your passion project. Begin by defining your target market and understanding their needs. Conduct thorough market research to identify pain points, preferences and trends. However, with perseverance and adaptability, you can overcome these hurdles. Maintain a positive mindset, learn from setbacks and be willing to pivot your strategy as needed.

Knowing your “why” is potentially the biggest component of success. Pursuing such an endeavor purely for profit or to follow a path someone said you “should” follow will not bring you the outcomes you dreamed of.  And, have you ever heard of “half built bridges”? This is the concept of seeking advice and ideas from trusted connections, who share their perspectives. After a discussion with one person, you shift your approach and focus on the new idea. Then, when you talk to another person who has a different idea, you pause your other work and start focusing on that. You’ve now created multiple half-built bridges. Always check back in with YOUR vision and ensure the ideas you are following keep you headed in the right direction – and allow you to fully build that bridge. 

Similarly, because you are your own “boss", you may get excited about ALL the things you CAN do – be cautious and don’t try to do everything, all at once. Maintain boundaries for yourself to ensure you are not turning your passion project into a burden. Stay true to your “why” and jot down those ideas from trusted colleagues and from your own self and revisit them when the time is right.
