Out of Control

Sometimes life feels out of control. The events that occur – planned or unplanned – do not always turn out as we hope. I realized how much I want to control every aspect of my life when I was going through a car wash recently. Why there? Well, it was one of those car washes where you stay in your car, put it in neutral and allow the moving tracks to pull your car through. I’ve watched those types of car washes clean my car as an observer, but had never been inside the car at the same time. As I sat in my car, I was unaware of what would happen next. My car slowly moved forward. I was unable to see, as rainbow-colored soap covered the windshield. I had a strong urge to grab the steering wheel, put my foot on the brake and do something to get back in control. It turned out fine, as you may expect, and I came out the other side with a clean car.

When you navigate through your life, do you feel you want to slam on the brakes or take the ‘steering wheel’ and go a different way? It’s difficult to be unaware of what’s coming. To trust in God, the universe or your higher power to gently guide you in the right direction. When life doesn’t go as planned, do you find yourself feeling hopeless and sad, or do you reflect on what happened and figure out what the next step is?

After all, everything we experience happens for a reason — go or bad — and while it’s difficult to recognize this in the heat of the moment, I guarantee you that someday it will all make sense.
